The next day started early, with a busy schedule of official functions for Callie. She, Lewis, and a few of the other riders planned to visit the Temple of Arundel, where the scrolls of the ancient kings were kept. Queen Arabella arranged several tours of the leading monuments of Albion, and this was one of the most famous.
The scrolls were reputed to be written by the ancient kings themselves and until recently, two of them had been missing. They were discovered in the lost city of Antheon by Dr. Monsoon’s archeological team and brought back to Ablion. The scrolls were historical records which documented the kings’ reign, the history of Albion, and predictions of future happenings. In fact, the ancient kings had predicted Callie’s arrival, and her role as protector of the enchanted throne of Albion, too.
Some said the scrolls had magical powers all their own, which was why they were guarded by the Priestesses of Arundel in their temple. Dr. Monsoon and his team were currently hard at work studying the newly discovered documents and making copies of the information held within them.
Lord Graydon served as escort for the sight-seeing party, along with a few of his men. They rode next to the royal carriage as it neared the spectacular temple, which stood tall in the distance.
“Wow, look at that,” Lewis said as he gazed out the window at the towering white spires. “Way cool.”
The other three dragon riders in the carriage regarded Callie in confusion.
“He means it’s very inspiring.”
The others nodded in understanding—Firenzo Aurelius, the rider from Kadru, Garth Gerittsen, from Villborg, and the sparkling-eyed Lady Arianna. When she’d heard there was to be a tour of the famous Temple of Arundel, Arianna had asked to be included. Apparently, she was interested in Albion history.
Callie invited Daryk Maksym as well, but he wouldn’t fit in the carriage.
As the vehicle neared the Temple of Arundel, Callie couldn’t help but gasp in awe at the beauty of the white stone structure. The walls seemed to glow with a warmth all their own as they gleamed in the bright sun. Five tall, narrow spires adorned the ornate peaked roof, one in the centre and one on each corner. They reached out as if trying to touch the sky.
As they pulled into the courtyard, Callie noticed that the stone was engraved in small, intricately carved patterns. The markings seemed to be in a language of some sort, but it was one Callie had never seen before.
“What a beautiful place,” Garth said in amazement. His naturally white hair still amazed Callie and Lewis, as did his brilliant silver eyes.
“It’s magnificent,” Firenzo said.
“Breathtaking,” Arianna added.
Callie was honored by their compliments. Though she had never seen the Temple of Arundel with her own eyes before, she was a princess of this land and felt an enormous pride for all of its historical landmarks.
Callie and Lewis were hopeful that here they’d find out more information about the mysterious Queen Arundel and her connection to the Darkness, if any.
